Justin Karlins
Digital Content Creator
I never envisioned myself creating digital content for a living. I was just an avid (okay fine, chronic) user of social media who enjoyed other people’s content that made me laugh, told stories, and uplifted the voices of people in communities around the world. If someone told me that I would go on to produce content for several organizations and coalitions, a congresswoman, cabinet secretaries, and even the damn White House, I would have laughed.
My name is Justin Karlins. I am currently the Senior Social Media Strategist at the AFL-CIO, working to amplify the voices of the labor movement and America’s working people. I am a proud member of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild (NewsGuild Local 32035). In previous lives, I was the Deputy Director of Digital Engagement at the U.S. Department of Labor for Secretary Julie Su, a Digital Manager and graphic Designer at the Progressive Policy Institute, a Press Assistant for Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy on Capitol Hill, and a professional golfer.

My Story
Like it did for millions of others, COVID changed my entire life.
I graduated from Rollins College in the middle of the pandemic lockdown in May 2020. While graduating from my living room through a YouTube livestream, I was extremely frustrated about the lack of clear communication from the government about what the hell folks should be doing to protect ourselves. This frustration only grew as I saw politicians and public officials on social media not meeting the moment and not getting people the information they desperately needed. None of our elected leaders were owning the digital space during COVID to help folks, build community, or even inform the public of what the government was doing for them.
After graduation, I worked to understand how to actually create the digital content I was watching online so I could use it for good. I joined my local Congresswoman’s 2020 campaign, where I worked doing anything from finance, digital content, and field organizing. I then joined her congressional district and Washington, D.C. office where I worked with and talked to constituents and created digital content. This was a formative time for me. Talking with constituents every day genuinely informed my digital content production. Getting to directly hear from constituents about what they thought, heard, and believed made me a better content producer and allowed me to communicate with them in a way that would speak to them.
One of the issues that spoke to me the most during that time was labor and workers’ rights. I have had several family members that were union members, and I cared deeply about workplace safety, rights, and law. In college, I worked at a golf course that was begging for an OSHA inspection and fine(s), so after a few close calls there, this was something that I have been up close and personal with. Almost everyone has to work, it might as well be safe, pay a living wage, and give you dignity and respect on the job, right?
At the beginning of 2023, I joined the Department of Labor to lead the creation of digital content for Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su. I was incredibly fortunate to get to pretend to be Julie Su every day online and travel across the country to film and produce videos for her, take photos, and craft her online messaging as the department fought to advance workers’ rights and improve workers’ workplaces. Getting to meet, interview, and just generally hang out with working people every day and hear their stories about how the department’s work impacted them cemented my passion for labor rights and fighting for America’s workers. The content I produced during this time is some of my favorite projects and it is time I hold close to my heart.
Just before the conclusion of the Biden-Harris administration, I joined the AFL-CIO to continue fighting for America’s workers and union members, where I currently lead digital strategy for the federation and work with our affiliates to get our pro-union, anti-billionaire messaging to working people.
Outside of work, I am finishing my master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University, where I am studying digital and political communications. I spend my free time playing golf, exploring Washington, D.C., and working on my photography hobby. I also spend time with my incredible fiancée, Amanda.
